i'm no authority on this, i'm just speaking from my own experience with
rtlinux-2.2 and -2.3pre2 and linux-2.2.14 and -2.2.16 source.
the distributed rtl 2.2 and 2.3 kernel patches build cleanly on a stock
linux-2.2.14 kernel source tree. they do not build cleanly on a
linux-2.2.16 kernel source tree. that's why i made the modified patch.
i haven't purposely changed any functionality. i just started with
a clean linux-2.2.16-9mdk source tree, applied the original patch, fixed
the rejects, and built a new patch. i built the resulting patched 2.2.16
kernel, booted it, and ran the rtl sample code to test. it all appeared
to work fine, at least as fine as with the original patch applied to a
2.2.14 kernel.
the -9mdk is because i'm using the linux mandrake linux-2.2.16 kernel
source rpm. if you're using redhat or something else, this will be
likely be different and you will have to adjust the patch accordingly.
