One of the features of PC104 , which may not be obvious, is the fact
that you can build up a system without a backplane.

You can get low power integrated single board systems that just need
a 5 volt power supply.

When you want to add serial, digital and analog I/O you can buy low cost
 boards that simply plug into each other.

There is an ISA bus distributed through a special stackable connector.
You can stack about 5-8 boards in this way.

The wiring can be somewhat messy but it provides a very low cost control
system.

PC104+ also adds a PCI bus through a second connector.
I don't see as many of these around but I have used both.
