hello,
# so does someone know where in the source code of tcpdump the linux (but
# not the rtlinux) kernel is called or used?? or anywhere else...

the sources(and docs) for tcpdump are available from:
http://www.tcpdump.org/

tcpdump is based on libpcap (packet capturing interface based on BPF - BSD
Packet Filter).
        ftp://ftp.ee.lbl.gov/papers/bpf-usenix93.ps.Z.

there was an effort to port tcpdump to rtl/rtai within rt_net project
(or at least it was on their todo list)

rgds,
Denis.
