Indeed, it can be done.
In the main, one uses mbuff to allocate memory etc. However, a colleague
of mine suggests that this is not optimal when large chunks of physical
ram are required - the sorts of memory chunks used by astronomical images
for example. In this case, several megabytes is needed and he figured out
a way to do it that is *very* similar to the old LILO reservation method.
Take a look at the attached gzipped tar file and see if it fits your needs.
The only limitation I know of is the amount of physical memory available.
