It sounds like you haven't compiled the ethernet card driver for the RTL
kernel... You have to look it up in the kernel config (make xconfig for
example) and make sure it's compiled in, or as a module. If the system works
with a normal kernel, it should work with the RTL kernel as well without
reconfiguration, as long as all the drivers are there.
