I guess RH6.1 uses some rather old version of 2.2 kernel. I hope that 2.2.18
has support for detecting more types. I think Linux in fact uses the cache
since it is configured by the BIOS, but just does not know how much.
BTW. If you have to update, use RH 6.2, avoid 7.0 version.

You will need to compile a kernel with support of up to 4 GB of physical
memory. The default is 1 GB.
The amount of shared memory is what you actually use now, not the maximum
amount.
I would advice you to get a fresh copy of 2.2.18 kernel from
http://www.kernel.org/, copy of RTL either most recent 2.3 or 3.0 from
ftp://ftp.fsmlabs.com/pub/rtlinux/ or RTAI (1.6 - should be easily
portable to 2.2.18) from http://www.aero.polimi.it/projects/rtai/
Then you should familiarize yourself with kernel compiling and instalation
(it really only sounds complicated).
