On thinking of this further the impression I get is that it should be
possible and I too am looking for some clarification, most especially as
to how "stable" system dirs are under software raid conditions:

The factor that restricts raid boot would seem to be the fact that at
boot time, raid is not active and because of this, LILO does not have
appropriate device info. 

The work around would most probably be in passing LILO (i.e.
/etc/lilo.conf) information (with respect to geometry, etc.) on the
drives used for boot raid, with such info being derived from "fdisk
-ul". This, I would expect, should make sure that LILO is able to load
the kernel even under raid conditions. 

My own question still remains as above, i.e., is it advisable to do so.
