I have been using RTLinux for about 2 1/2 years now. I use it mainly to provide real
time control of specialized high speed high force hydraulic systems. I have also used
RTLinux to control 480 Volt 200 Amp 3 phase power to provide special situations.
One of the things that I really like about RTLinux is its modularity. I do not have
to install modules for things that I do not need. This keeps the clutter and
confusion of new users to a minimum.
Since I had not even used Linux before coming across RTLinux on the web it was a big
leap for me. I have learned a lot from the mailing list. These people are great at
helping out when others get stuck. I have been helped and hopefully my inputs have
been able to help others. The help is usually quite prompt which really helps in a
schedule pinch.
I like the Linux environment because I can use makefiles and RCS to control the entire
project. I can build the project and force the components to reside where I want them
with a single command.
One of the drawbacks of not having used Linux or the many programs that are available
from the community is not knowing what is out there. However, searching on Linux and
asking the mailing list provides many answers.
Because I had not done any graphics programming in Linux, but I had programmed things
using LabView, I use LabView from National Instruments to provide the graphic user
interface to the real time programs.
I hope this helps you in some way,
Rich
