I need to set up a computer which can support two very different
RTL-versions on two very different kernels.
1) RTL-0.9J on 2.0.36 (basically RedHat 5.2)
2) RTL v3 on 2.2.x (basically RedHat 6.2) (probably x=18)
Currently I have #1 installed. I'd like to install #2 on a second disk so I
can eventually make it the primary and retire #1. Because of the
significant differences between the two kernels, the libraries, and the
applications programs for the two kernels/versions, I don't think that just
having two different kernels available to choose from will work.
What I really want is to be able to choose which OS to boot at the LILO
prompt, but I believe that this may not be possible. I was looking at both
my /etc/lilo.conf and the lilo user documentation and saw that the drive
from which to boot is a "global" parameter.
If 'boot' is global, then the only way to switch between these two OS is to
boot whichever happens to be installed, and see which one it is. If it's
the one I want, I'm set; if not, I have to run lilo to install a new map
which specifies that the other drive is the boot drive and then reboot
again. While this can work, it's certainly not convenient.
Which finally brings me to the question: If you support multiple versions
of RTL, how do you engineer the switching between them?
