Even with IEEE1588 you will not reach arbitrarily high  precision  if
you  have  to  do  the  timestamping  of  the received PTP packets in
software only. I'm not aware of many ethernet  controllers  that  are
capable  of  detecting  and  timestamping  PTP  packets in hardware -
actually the only one I know of is the one in the PPC405EZ.
