(Build ruby's ri index on a Soekris net4801, takes about a day of  
wall-clock time.)

This seems to come from downloading and extracting a bulk index.  I  
see similar large growth from:

gem sources -c
gem list -r nosuchgem

Jim and I were talking about trying incremental upload all the time,  
rather than bulk at RailsConf...
