Hi Ryan, thanks for your reply. I have figured out my problem. It was because I was using a wrong event:
Event.observe(dateTextField, 'change', function(event){ ... . 'change' apparently is not a valid event. Changing it to 'blur' does what I want. Thanks again! WiB.
