Thanks for all the comments via email, everyone!  I appreciate the
great advice.

In response:

1) I've updated the calendar control to work with IE6, and tested with
IE7, Firefox (Mac and PC), and Safari.
2) Changed the update on date select to accept a function as oppose to
just a simple HTML element update.
3) Taken a stab a improving performance by weeding out some leaky
objects.
