You can call .stop() on your periodical updater object once you've created
it.  Just have to save it away....

var updater = new Ajax.PeriodicalUpdater(...);
if (someCondition) updater.stop();

Different issue - what the OP posted doesn't involve a PeriodicalUpdater.
