Not sure what you're asking. Are you trying to do an update (replace the
contents of the element) or an insert? Insert takes a hash:
$("layoutMessages").insert({before: "asdf"});
$("layoutMessages").insert({after: "asdf"});
$("layoutMessages").insert({top: "asdf"});
$("layoutMessages").insert({bottom: "asdf"});
