Greg - you might take a look at time_with_zone.rb in ActiveSupport - I'm looking at 2.2.0 but I know it's in 2.1.2 as well.
a = Time.now a.is_a?(Time) => true a = "My name is Fred" a.is_a?(Time) => false Maybe closer to what you need?
