That error sounds a lot the one you get with earlier versions of rails 4.2.x 
that weren’t compatible with ruby 2.4. I’d try the most current version of 
rails 4.2.x (4.2.11.1). There shouldn’t be any feature differences between that 
and the version you already had, so if the tutorial you are following is for 
rails 4 you should be fine.
