John, if you want to learn Ruby and Ruby on Rails, you probably need to start by buying a book first that explains all the basics of the language. A lot of people start with this one for Rails: http://www.pragprog.com/titles/rails3/agile-web-development-with-rails-third-edition which if I remember correctly takes you step by step in building an online store.
