I don't have that much experience on the topic, but I my guess would be that if you write your code on top of some application server like JBoss AS, clustering should be fairly transparent to your application. You may want to have a look at http://docs.jboss.com/jbossas/guides/clusteringguide/r2/en/html/ to evaluate this approach with regard to your requirements.
