As someone who's just begun to learn my way around rust, (and taking notes) and likely to try to contribute to the tutorial, I much prefer having the tutorial in git with the code. It seems that overall trying to keep any documentation out of the git repo is a recipe to get it out-of-sync with the current revision. Just see LLVM and much of their wiki-only documentation, it's almost uniformly out of date.
