I have been building kits since I was 11. My first was a Sn42 (HO) Ambroid
B&M winged snowplow. The second was a wooden CNR caboose made of wood and
white metal castings. I still have those 2 and will keep them. The point is
if you make it, part of you is in it and whether or not it is as good or
better looking than RTR, it is still yours. And in reality if you built it,
it is always better than RTR!

I finally saw the Proto 2000 Sn42 (H0) RTR Fowler Patent cars. Yuck! Anyone
could do a better job without even trying! They just don't look right. The
Westerfield resin kits are way better. Ridgehill/Kaslo is coming out with
resin 36' Fowler car kits. They will be the best. Like the CNR caboose, not
hard to build. The trick is the finish.

You can have a great model that looks bad because of a poor finish. And you
can have an average model looking great because of a great finish.

So you see, as in all the other areas of Model Railroading, there are many
disciplines at work here. Building, detailing, painting, wiring etc. These
skills are very helpful in the layout building stage.
