Ed, The wind sock today is pretty much used to watch the wind direction, any time odor or possible airborne chemical spread might occur from an accident or malfunction that might release any of that gas material, to enable responding crews to approach such an accident from the up wind side or from the side, but certainly not head right into the wind flow. And to be able to determine the direction of movement to notify surrounding communities or towns as to potiential problem that might be headed that direction.
