Folks...

Just recently I have received numerous inquiries along the lines
of "is the NYC train similar to the XYZ train?" or "Is the NYC diner
close to the ABC diner?" And so forth. Seems as though several folks
are now getting serious about possibly using one of the NYC full
scale length Budd cars as a stand-in for some other car belonging to
their favorite minority railroad. I suppose that is only natural,
but I gotta tell you I am not a passenger car expert or even close to
one. So those kinds of questions I cannot answer.

Most of the Kaslo Budd NYC cars being made are shown in a book by
David W. Randall titled "THE PASSENGER CAR LIBRARY, Volume 2, New
York Central and North Eastern Railroads". Probably comparing the
dimensions in this book to your favorite car/train is the best way to
determine how close the NEW ENGLAND STATES is to the train you really
want. Or, ask me to send you the Kaslo pamphlet which shows
undimensioned illustrations of each car.

However, there still might be a way to get what you want -- sort of.
How about this crazy idea? Remember, Kaslo Shops Distributing has
offered to produce Budd cars with reservations/deposits for only 35-
50 units. So why not pick your favorite diner (or whatever car), and
rustle up a bunch of reservations from your same-minority-railroad
buddies? If you can get 35 reservations total, you too can have your
favorite Budd car made. Most likely right after the NYC train is
completed.

Here is another crazier idea! Why not inquire of Kaslo if they would
be willing to make a full scale length Budd car with blank sides,
i.e., no windows at all? With a blank sided plastic car, the modeler
would be able to cut out any window pattern he desires to get the car
he craves. If some enterprising fellow with a milling machine or a
laser machine set himself up to do some window cutting, the task
would be even simpler. Flush fitting transparent windows could be
made with a laser. Done all the time. No problem. Ask Laser
Horizons.

So think creatively and maybe you can find a way to get exactly what
you want.

Good luck...Ed L.
