Each train had an A-B set of diesels, the 'A' being a shovel nose: "Silver King-Silver Queen" and "Silver Knight-Silver Princess". The cars in order were: Baggage-Mail; Baggage Dormitory Lounge; 2 coaches; Diner; three 12 Section Sleepers; a 6-3 1 Drawing Room Sleeper and the Observation-Parlor. Originally built as an articulated train, the cars were later broken up, some remained in twin unit sets. In 1956 the train was completely re-equipped with 8 new Budd designs including vista-domes.
Hope that helps. You might look for Doughty's book on "The Early Zephyr's" for more detailed info. I too road the DZ, but the refitted version. In 1965 I went with my scout troop to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, NM. The train trip from Fort Wayne went Pennsy to Chicago and then overnight on the DZ to Denver. We spent the day touring Denver then on to Trinidad, CO on the Texas Zephyr, where we finally road school buses to Philmont. Jim River Raisin ---------- No virus found in this outgoing message.
