In trying to learn about the prototype 75 ft F-39 cars ( la BTS) I came
across the fact that it is a popular misconception that 50 ft flatcars
predate 75 foot flatcars. Trailer Train Co started with those 75 foot
trailers, but when typical trailer length went from 35 foot to 40 foot,
Trailer Train added 50 foot flat cars to its fleet for one trailer to a flat
car service.

Also, see Model RailroadING April 1989 for an article on how, in the
sixties, the UP draw-bar-connected those 53 ft Commonwealth cast steel flat
cars in pairs for COFC service.
