According to the technical experts at the US Gypsum Co., the correct
way to measure and mix plaster, including Hydrocal, is by weight.
This assures the proper chemical reactions take place fully. For
complete mixing, add the powder to the water and not the other way
around. Most Hydrocal used by model railroaders is considered "fast
dry" and sets up in 5-10 minutes or less. However, there is another
version of Hydocal named "FGR95" which takes about 45-60 minutes to
set up with the same strength as the fast dry stuff we have become
familiar with. FGR95 is also a product of US Gypsum Co. US Gypsum
Co has an 800 number for customer support and the fellow there was
very helpful with all my questions. Personally, I like the slower
setting stuff since rushing is not my style and getting
everything "just right" before it hardens is important to my way of
thinking. Good luck...Ed L.
