Hi David. Probably the closest to what you describe that I've seen is at
the Railroad Museum in Elkhart, Indiana. They are next to the NS tracks.
If I recall correctly, they have a couple of viewing decks. There used
to be a restaurant in the front part of the building, and it had outside
decks you could view the action from. Walbridge, Ohio, has the
Railroaders Park, next to the CSX line. It also has baseball diamonds, a
concession stand when games are played, and a paved walking area next to
the tree line next to the rail line. The trees are widely spaced, so
viewing the tracks is fairly easy. Deshler, Ohio has a small, flat park
at the intersection of 2 mainlines. Romulus, Michigan has a sort of a
railroaders park next to the CSX main, and just south of the NS main.
They have park benches, picnic tables, a gazebo, an ex-C & O caboose,
and an ex-NW storage shed. You can set in your car at the parking area
along the park, and see the trains from there, when the weather is bad.
Flat Rock, Michigan, has a park that the Huron River runs through. There
is a bridge across the river, that CN and I & O use now, it was the
DT&I. The park is just south of the ex-DT&I yard, along the mainline.
There are parking areas along the park that allow you to see the trains
from your car. There are a number of parking spaces that view the river,
the bridge, and any trains passing over, in a straight line. The bridge
shares the train tracks with a road, and you can walk down that road to
get to the other side of the park, which is right next to the tracks.
Monroe, Michigan has the Vietnam Memorial Park right next to the NS & CN
lines. They also have a park on the River Raisin, across the street from
the through truss bridges carrying NS and CN across the river. Milan,
Michigan has 2 areas you can view from - although they aren't intended
for train viewing. The Soccer field on the east side is on the north
side of the NS main, with a section of the tree line cleared so you have
an unobstructed view. Downtown Milan has a couple of parks that also
border the NS main. At the north park, across the street and pond, is
the Ann Arbor main. I've watched the Rail cams from Rochelle, Ill, FT
Dodge, Iowa, and the one from California. A few years ago, there was a
rail fan group in Cincinnati, Ohio that was trying to get a rail cam
going. The area was shown in the Pentrex video on Cincinnati - 24hrs in,
or dusk to dawn in Cincinnati, something like that. Hope it helps.
Barry.

Subject: [S-Scale Modeling] Photo and Observation Stations

This is not directly related to the "S" list but I felt there are
answers to my questions in the group. Our local municipalty (Imlay
City) has received a grant to spruce-up the downtown area. One of
their porjects includes the building of one or two platforms near the
CN mainline, in the Downtown Depot District to allow photographers and
train watchers a good, unobstructed view of the action. Trains pass by
every 35 to 45 minutes 24 hours a day. I'm sure this has been done
elsewhere and I'm looking for some input.
The group is also considering instlation of a web-cam with interent
access. I know this has been done in areas out west, BNSF comes to
mind.

Any input would be helpful be it text, pictures, drawings, etc.

Thanks,

Dave Held
