I enjoy all of the modeling magazines, but my enjoyment depends upon what the
content is. For that reason, I do not subscribe to any of them but choose to
pick them up at the hobby shop when the content is relevant to me. MR, despite
all the criticism, has had some "relevant" articles from time to time. For
example, some day I intend to construct a passenger car as an article in MR
described it about a year ago. RMC has run a fine series of articles by Ted
Culotta on "Essential Freight Cars." Some of these cars are available in S:
the USRA single-sheathed car and the USRA double-sheathed car. Anyone who is
interested in the Forties and the Fifties can order a GN composite car from
Earl Tuson. This is a beautiful car that was seen all over the United States
in the time period under consideration. One could adapt the single-sheathed
radial-roofed cars from old KINSMAN kits using the radial curve of
Northeastern's caboose roof stock. More work, true, but doable. MM often
offers plans in S, and one could--dare I say it--scratchbuild certain cars.
The SOO LINE sawtooth single sheath comes to mind.
