Just a quick post to let let folks know about S Scale Model
Railroading here on the frozen tundra. Dave Jasper is taking the
Lake Woebegon switching layout from the 99 Convention and a wharf
section from his dismanteled layout as the foundation for a new
layout that he is starting. The PPSSW will be at Dave's all day the
2nd of January to build benchwork. Last week, we visited Dave
Hamilton's layout. Dave has added a new section to his S switching
layout. He will have a terriffic operation in a limited space.
Everyone of Dave's engines is sound equipted so it makes a wonderful
symphony of sound when they are all burbling away. Steve Doyle has
made a change to his right of way and it created a space for an
Urban Canyon. I stopped over last night to see his mock up and it
is really a great scene. This scene is very Urban Chicago. Imagine
that you are railfanning, looking down a canyon of structures that
have built up on either side of the railroad right of way. The
structures are the back end of the buildings, great scenic interest
but the trains are clearly the star of the show. The approaching
train will bend into the scene, ducking under the EL and run
straight toward you. I think the buildings will cause the sound of
the engines to echo as they come to the front of the scene and then
bend to your right as it heads for the suburbs and then rural
Illinois. Here on the Minnesota Heartland, Pine River industrial
area is coming together, I have started on my operations system and
plan to have a operating session between the holidays. In the
family area, Marilyn has built a wonderful scene using her
Department 56 buildings, the S Helper Track System and some of my
freight cars to bring a load of decorations into her scene. An old
Flyer Atlantic is on the point this year but next year, she is
counting on a new 2-8-0 to power the Santa special.
