A quick trick....

If you have MS Office, and it won't recognize the WPD file,  save it first
and then rename it to a .WP file.  MSO should know that one.



For PDF programs, a mrc in New York State uses something called PDFFactory,
I believe it's freeware but have never tried it myself.
