Dave,

Instead of using Crystal Cote, wait until you get some finer
sandpaper.  At least 1200 grit.  It may only be available at an
automotive paint supply store but a good hardware store should have it
too.  Get the kind that us usable wet, it will give the best finish. 
Also you could use a sandable primer beforehand.  Any questions,
