If you are the type that likes to actually model things, as in "build"
models, as opposed to buying 'em and running 'em, here is an idea that
might appeal to you. MARX makes a nice starting point for a NYC Hudson
tender. It is the correct width and matches other S scale equipment.
Tenders without locos were used in MOW trains and wreck trains as fuel
cars and water cars. Typically, a steam-powered crane would have a
tender coupled right next to it to provide water (for the steam) and
coal (for the heat). These trains frequently carried crew cars of
various kinds and even a kitchen car which needed water and/or fuel of
various kinds. I saw one photo with a tender labeled as a "diesel fuel
car". Using an Overland Hudson brass tender for this purpose could get
rather expensive to say the least. But using a MARX plastic tender for
this purpose would be quite reasonable to say the least. I now have
four of them (not for sale) and paid about $10-$14 each on eBay. MARX
also makes other tenders which are not so obviously part of the NYC
family. Not to mention AF tenders which are suitable for the same
purpose. Have not explored Lionel tenders yet. The tender on eBay (see
below) is made of plastic with a metal floor. MARX also used the same
mold to make a diecast version of the same tender. I think it would be
too heavy and much more difficult to work with. Cast on details need to
be removed and other details need to be added. Same as with the good
old AF stuff in the goode olde daze. Click here to see what I am
talking about:
