This thread made me realize that most of us are remembering trains from the
late 50s thru to AMTRAK start up. Early photos of passenger trains do show
the pristine consists. I remember the Shasta Daylight when it was matching,
and remember my disapointment when it started showing up with other shcemed
cars and locomotives in the consists. I read later (wish I could remember
where) that this was a deliberate move by the RR marketing people to
discourage passengers so they could justify ending services. Makes sense to
me, because, even as a toddler, I noticed the change.
I do find the desire for EXACTLY correct cars interesting. I once admired a
modeler's CZ consists, and her comment was, "well, it's nice, but this car
is wrong, and this one, and I just haven't found anyone making the correct
cars except in brass, which I can't afford." BTW, the CZ was one train that
was kept pristine until the end! I hate to tell you all this, but only the
most "nerdy" thenico, railfan/modeler will ever know that the window on that
car is 1/2" off, etc. We seem to forget that part of modeling is creating
the illusion of reality. Tricking the eye into thinking it is seeing what it
isn't-like breaking up the site of a train going by so it appears longer-is
what makes a model railroad great.
Well, enough preaching for one posting!
