As a newbie to S, I figured out that to work in this scale/gauge means
several things.

First, I will never have the variety of locomotive and freight car
prototypes that are available in HO.So what!

Second, To have the best of what is available in S scale/gauge, I will need
to have a Hi Rail layout with code 100 or 148 rail. That way I can run AF as
well as sale. I like to repaint Lione, AF and Marx junkers and convert them a
bit.

Third, While selective compression is probably a must in S in many instances,
the detail that one can put into a structure or scratch built/kit bashed car
makes up for it. Certainly, there are models in HO that require some selective
compression as well. (bridges, steel mills etc.) For years I read that S was
the scratch builders scale.

Finally, One thing that is probably more important to me than doing a perfect
scale representation of a particular railroad at this point is to give what I
can build as much a true to life feel as possible.I read an article some where
recently where a guy who was a real railroader said he would probably never
build a layout because he didn't think he could do justice to the "feel of the
thing" A lot of wonderful prototypically correct model railroads have been
built, but if one doesn't use details, weathering etc you won't take the step
toward giving the thing the look and feel of a real railroad.I really took what
that guy said to heart.

I made my decission and got over the "if only S had this or that feeling".
After all S is smaller than O so we already have somewhat of an advantage don't
we! There is no perfection here. This is supposed to be fun. You are simply
either a model railroader or you are a person who strives toward historical
representation. Both have there place.

I don't want to get into another schism between S lovers. We are already
divided between AF, Hi Rail, Scale, Fine Scale etc. Lets not develop another
division of "perfect non compressed proportion". This does not down play what
you are saying, but I am trying to keep it is perspective (No pun intended)
