We used plaster cloth on our first display layout. Other than weighing a ton, the plaster would crack every time we moved the layout. Our current layout uses foam for everything. We used 2" blue builders foam for the board and WS risers and elevations for the subroadbed. The embankments are made from "Great Stuff" canned foam insulation (triple expanding). For the mountains we used the geodesic foam system. Info on this can be found at:
http://www.bragdonent.com/index.htm We have written up the technique in using these in our Track Planning Guide. At larger train showsI have seen rubber rock sections that look very nice. I am not sure the companies name. They are hot glued in place and are pre-weathered. These really look good. Don Yahoo!
