Ed,
I tore down a layout a few years ago and am working on a new
layout. My layout used open grid construction. Originally, I
planned to reuse two large yard areas, so I cut through the
track and any scenery, disconnected wires and took the
sections apart. Initially, I kept the benchwork section intact
other than some odd sizes that I knew I could not reuse as is.
All benchwork sections were stripped of usable items, such as
terminal blocks, turnout controls, wire, etc.
As it turned out, I realized this was a chance to redo everything
so the sections I had saved for reuse were also stripped.
As it turned out I moved again. Right now, I have all the basic
benchwork in for a basement sized layout, approximately, 27' X
34', but also including stairs, furnace, and a worshop area,
some of which has track above.
I used esiting benchwork sections as-is for about 25% of the
layout. The remaining sections were disassembled and the
lumber was used for the remainder of the layout (some of it is
in it's third layout). I did have to buy new lumber for legs, but
only because I raised the elevation from my old layout. Other
than that I spent maybe $100 for new lumber for the whole
layout, mostly becaused I wanted some longer pieces. BTW,
some of the old benchwork was originally from a fence at my
parents house.
Besides lumber, I saved for reusing:
Del-Aire turnout motors and controls including large pieces of
tubing
screws and other hardware
terminal blocks
relays, switches, and misc. electrical items
Loconet cables and jacks (Digitrax system)
layout lighting fixtures
lighting valance and facia
buildings
trees
I started saving wire, but I have enough surplus wire to do my
new layout and then some, so I threw it away.
I also saved some track where it wasn't ballasted yet, but I'm
planning to just lay new track.
