Thanks for the comments. I often have had to resort to
re-announcements when the new products were too thin. As good as the
latest Dispatch was, I was sad to note the dearth of new product
announcements. I had a dialog with a new managing editor at MRN about
the need for change in the column. I pretty much said the same thing
you did about the duplication with similar news in the Dispatch and
SG, etc. He still encouraged me to do it and when I gave it some
further thought I agreed to try it. First of all, the MRN is a great
way to reach the non-S audience. Because of that, I have deliberately
wrote the column with an underlying theme of promotion while trying to
inform the S scale readership. Most of the product announcements were
pretty old anyway by the time they were published due to the
every-other-month schedule of the column. But in just getting S
products in print whether old or new, I hoped to convey the idea that
S indeed had them available. I don't know how well this tack has
succeeded, but that's what I've been up to these 6 years.
There are other reasons for the paradigm switch. MRN actually
initiated the dialog due to various legal and quality (the pics)
issues. I hope everything works out OK, because I believe that
S-Curves is the only regular S-only column that's in a non-S magazine
and we can only benefit from such exposure.
I like your last suggestion. If the manufacturers had a central
"agency" handling their product annoucements it would be a boon to S.
Perhaps CD's like SHS produces could be put out. But, getting all the
manufacturers on the same page is as someone once said, "Like herding
cats".
