The best advice I've gotten on a DCC system was to "buy what your 
friends have". 
 A) It gives you a chance to pre-test a system's functionality and 
performance.
 B) It brings along a built in support group and Help Desk! <G>

As a side note, I've already outfitted locomotives, mostly brass but 
some plastic, with decoders from Digitrax, NCE, Zimo, Lenz and most 
recently TCS.  Can't say I have a favorite, all have provided great 
performance.  The key is doing any necessary "tweaking" before 
installing the decoder.
