In terms of monetarily collectible stuff, relatively few things in the model
train world are such, which comes as no surprise to anyone. In point of
fact, most everything any of us buys is worth less (monetarily) the instant
it becomes ours. About the only train thing that I have bought new in recent
years that actually appreciated was the Lionel large lift bridge. Paid
around $200 for it, sold it for $600. In my observation, most of the O and S
stuff is, in the collecibiles market, just consumer goods. The stuff that
really has little resale value is HO and N. I see plenty of examples in both
scales at train shows, and they go for pennies on the dollar, generally
speaking.
But if person has fallen out of love with and is generally burned out on a
hobby, what's the point?
It is pretty easy for a model train nut (I am the biggest nut) to get on a
roll, buying what would have to be considered "too much." Don't ask me how I
know. In that event, and in my case at least, a thinning of the collection
becomes necessary. I have had more than one moment in the past wherein I
thought about just selling everything for whatever I could get, keeping
maybe one engine a few cars to run on the club layout. I don't beat myself
up like that anymore. But that's just me...
Cheers :)

BTW, your assessment of this changing hobby is accurate in my
opinion. It used to be a fellow could buy something he thought he
might use in the future and if not sell it and get his money back.
Doesn't seem to work these days. I only buy what I will use for sure
and don't expect to get anything out of it except enjoyment (the way
it should be I guess).
