Michael is right, now they offer a jig to make not only the frog but the
points also. A good sharp 10" or so mill file makes fast work of the rail
for the frog and points. If nothing else, the jig for the frog and points
is worth the money. They now can accommodate code 83 or code 100. I even
used my old frog jig and installed the c125 rail in head first since the
head was the same width as the foot of the c100. I used that to make a frog
for an O scale switch. And speaking of HO to S, I use the Fast Track jig to
make a frog and wing rails and then gauged the rail to HO for an On30
switch. The Fast Track jigs are easy to use and even my first switch I made
was superior to the Shinohara switch. The one engine I haven't tested yet
on my #5's is the new AM 4-8-4. But my SD60's down to the SW-1 go right
through it. One thing I did find was my early AM diesels had issues with
the guard rails being too close. A quick check with the NASG track and
wheel gage showed the AM to have fatter flanges and a bit narrower than the
recommended gauge. Not a big deal, just a quick re-solder of the guard rail
and all was fine. It was easier to do that than re-wheel 3 f units, 3
GP9's, 3 GP35's and 2 FA2's. On a positive note, the newer AM diesels like
the SD60 and U25B have finer treads and flanges. All in all, the Fast Track
jig looks expensive but you get a superior product and it's surprisingly
easy to use with a break even at five turnouts even with the frog jig
figured in. My first layout section will be using five turnouts and the
next close to ten.
