That depends on the railroad and the weight of the rail. I have a
B&O "tie spacing-main line" drawing from 1946. They list 24 ties, 22
ties and 18 ties per 39" section of rail. At the joints, the spacing is
closer . The length of the joint bars effects this distance. Also, it
was very different for switches.
