    Hi Bruce, Last time I looked for rail it was cheaper to buy code
100 atlas HO flextrack and strip off the ties than it was to buy bare
rail. It takes about 30 seconds to turn the flextrack into two bare
rails. If you find a table with HO track at at a train show then it's
even a better deal. 
     There's been lots of switch building articles over the years. 
 I learned about 30 years ago from an article by old Jack Work so I
can't tell you who to look for now but maybe a search for "Tony
Koester turnout" would turn up something.....dave
