I also use quartz ballast. (You don't want C&NW "Pink Lady" ballast? Simply
spray it a different color.)

Any large city, Milwaukee in my case, has dealers in fine stone aggregates.
Some 20 or more years ago I went thru the local edition of "Business
Edition" yellow pages. I then visited 2 or 3 such establishments, taking
along a magnet and some properly sized screens. The dealers, while used to
working with purchasers of large quanities, were very helpful and actually
interested in what I wanted the product for. One even gave me several
samples. The upshot was, I ordered 25 pounds of granite from a supplier in
Minnesota thru the local dealer. I also purchased a variety of other stone
products from these guys in various sizes. It takes a little legwork but the
savings are out of this world over buying commercial model railroad ballast
if you want very much. Surely a club or informal group could do this to
their advantage.
