Apparently some people missed the fact that I was talking about                 
        l o c o m o t i v e kits.Some clarity is in order:

I do not consider "shake the box"; almost RTR material as a kit. They are great 
starting points for projects but, that's not what I'm referring to.
 
I did not mention the word steam as MDC has had only one non steam loco kit to 
my knowledge but, it you aren't familiar with that line you wouldn't know. My 
bad.

Believe it or not putting the chassis and running gear together and fiddling 
with until it functions smoothly on a piece of glass. Then fitting the gears 
and motor and watching the drivers and rods take life is a beautiful thing.

Next comes the detailing of the boiler. MDC's heavy cast boilers were 
wonderful.  Crude? Yes but that helped you to hone modeling skills that come in 
handily later. Best of all, if you messed up, another boiler could be had.The 
same was true for the cab and tender.

When the building is done comes the painting and lettering. None of these 
things have to be done on a deadline. You are in control of how  customized 
your locomotive is. A tremendous sense of satisfaction that only building it 
yourself can bring is the ultimate reward in model building. Even if you are 
ashamed to show to anyone else.
