Hi Ed, The N scale guys are definitely modelers but they view the
rolling stock as parts for the large model which is the layout. The
cars are too small to be the focus, the scenery and the operations are
where N shines.
As for building kits or buying rtr. I've found it's a life phase
decision. When I was young I liked to build everything from scratch or
kit but now I'm happy to avoid the repetition and will gladly buy rtr
if it is offered. The new rtr stuff is a lot better than anything we
built in the old days anyway! It might also depend on whether one
built a lot of kits when they were younger? I've noticed that a lot of
old guys like harleys or hotrods but I don't because I raced
motorcycles and nascar in my youth and got over them!! Now days I'll
build something if it's not available but if I can get it rtr I'll buy
it and weather it a bit and be very happy.
I've found this rtr philosophy applies to many areas of my life. I
once preferred old cast iron shop tools but have sold them and
replaced them with new efficient light weight stuff and am very happy.
I no longer have to spend time maintaining and sharpening. Disposable
carbide blades are just as handy as rtr when it comes to saving hours
of our lives!!......dave
