The statement above explains why there is no standard now and why
there is no need for one in future.
The trucks of an importer/manufacturer roll along S scale track and
through S scale switches because of existing track and wheel
standards that are intended to promote interchange. The length of the
axle that supports the wheel is immaterial to this interchange.
The majority of S scale modelers stick with whatever wheelsets came
with their trucks and are not even aware of the slight differences in
axle length. For the few modelers who want to replace wheelsets
Northwest Short Line is happy to supply axles of the appropriate
length for the same price. All the modeler has to do is select the
truck into which he will install his new wheelsets. Having to make
this choice is not equivalent to the need for a standard.
