Time for my annual "review" of the Carmel/Indy S scale show put on today by
Charles Malinowski and the Hoosier S Gaugers.

First, Des Plaines Hobbies, River Raisin, Michigan Models and Jay Williams (Big
Four Photos) were vendors there. I didn't have time to check out the others,
so am unsure if they were individuals or businesses. I wasn't aware that
S-Helper Service had undecorated PS-2 hoppers - I picked up one, so now have 13
total PS-2s and they are too modern for me (my New Year's resolution will be to
not be tempted by any more - other than this I am holding steady to my era).
Last week I found out that S Scale America had GATX tank cars and was
disappointed to learn that they were all sold out. I did pick up a UTLX
version, even though I only have photos of GATX and MobilGas tank cars online
the Winona [IN] Railroad. I dropped cash at all the above vendors except River
Raisin, and if Dan would have convinced me to pick up a sharp looking NYC unit
(BL-9 I believe), I'm sure I'd have walked away with it as well.

I was unable to attend the clinics, but the DCC clinic looked very full.

I was impressed that Alan Evans had the NASG module there again, and he even
asked about my boys and why they weren't there (did they leave that bad of an
impression the last couple of years? <vbg>).

I did not have time to check out the Hoosier S Gaugers layout this year, but it
was up and running.

Overall, I was impressed with the quality of the vendors and was reacquainted
with attenders from previous years. I finally made a personal connection with
one of the Northern Ohio S Gaugers (sorry - I don't have your business card
handy and can't recall your name). Unfortunately, I wasn't able to spend the
time there I wanted to - I drove down 2+ hours for the door opening, then had
to drive back north 2.5 hours for my oldest son's basketball game in Elkhart at
2:00, then to pick up a couple of kids from a chess tournament an hour or so
back south in Warsaw, so couldn't stay long. I did put some miles on my car,
but nothing compared to the vendors from Illinois and Michigan. I'll let
Charles tell who traveled the farthest to be there - I did hear of attendees
from several states away. I feel this has been a great show, yet it still
keeps improving from year to year, and if there is a date for next year's
event, I will definitely plan on putting it on my calendar.

I was able to enjoy Ms. Barbara's "40 foot hot dog" on my drive back north.

Good job guys!
Mark Plank
