"downstream to nowhere important -- like Harrisburg or Philly, PA. "
Dear Edward,
Just to let you know that Harrisburg from , Wagon Trains, Canal Boats, trains
and highways, has been referred to as the "Cross Roads to the East - West " for
several hundred years.
Harrisburg's Pennsylvania Station and the Reading Station that sits almost
next to it on Market St. was a very busy place during the railroads passenger
years.
Also, Pennsy's Lucknow and Enola Yards and Reading's Rutherford Yards are still
to this day very busy with modern day freight operations.
The Pennsy's GG1's running the mainline from New York - Philadelphia -
Harrisburg are sorely missed by most of us central Pennsylvania train
watchers.. (AMTRAK makes the run now-a-days.)
Boy, did they look neat running alongside of us, as we were driving on Route
#230 out of Lancaster, Pa.
When they completely rebuilt the Pennsylvania Station in Harrisburg, (November
1986) the Pennsylvania Railroad Historical Society had a big train show there
that also featured the big GG1's. WOW! They sure are magnificent engines!
You can now see them at the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum in Strasburg, Pa.
Anyway, while I'm not a Pennsylvania Railroad authority, I am very proud of our
central Pennsylvania heritage and what it has meant to the building of
industrial America over all these years.
Have a very nice day,
Bill Fraley
