The talk of PRS car weight got me thinking. Because the PRS car is assembled by
gluing the roof on the body casting, removing the weight will be very
difficult.

I wondered if the same were true of the DPH S-Scale America 52-ft Evans box
car.

It wasn't much of a challenge. Here is how I did it.

The floor is glued into the body-roof casting. After taking off the trucks and
couplers, I pried the structural members off. It wasn't difficult--not much
glue holding it on, thankfully.

Next I pried around the edges of the floor until I broke the glue loose. Then I
pried the floor out of the body. Go carefully with this, but patience and
persistence pays off.

The last step is the hardest, removing the steel weight. For this job, I used a
putty knife and forced it between the floor and the weight. I worked from one
end and then from the other. Aside from popping off the air reservoir, it went
without a hitch. However the glue is pretty strong. You need to use quite a bit
of force. Take your time.

The weight weighs 4.1 ounces. Now, Ed can run these on his layout! DPH just
needs to decorate them for service on the NYC in 1948. ;-)
