Ed --
We agree! It is too close knit of a community and, as a very general
statement, S seems to lag behind other scales with regard to new advances in
the hobby. Areas such as DCC, CMRI, JMRI, Op Sessions, etc. are much more
common/popular in the other scales than in S. Every serious HO guy I know
is involved with DCC and/or Tsunami sound with only one exception -- and he
just displays brass models without any layout. S scale has a few DCC
enthusiasts, but most are still looking at it after ten years and wondering
if they can conquer the mystery. As I think backwards in time, it seems
that even can motors replaced open frame motors in the other scales much
sooner than in S scale. I've often thought that many S guys would benefit
from some elbow-rubbing with the talented folks in other scales. One reason
to join the NMRA if nothing else.
On the other hand, S is a wonderfully close knit community. The friendships
are great, visiting homes/layouts around the countryside is neat, drinking
Jamie's beer at the convention is your initiation, everyone knows all the
manufacturers on a first-name basis, the deadbeats get drummed out in a
hurry, you can influence the course of S events easily, and so forth. Of
course, all of these factors are readily available in the other scales as
well and so S is not really unique in this manner of things.
That's the beauty of S -- it is TOO close knit and WONDERFULLY close knit
all at the same time.
Just some random thoughts here to start your weekend. The fires are now
extinguished here in California and the mighty NYC has survived. See you at
O SCALE WEST+S in early 2009.
